Ride through the heart of Chile’s Lake District, where snow-capped volcanoes rise dramatically over emerald valleys and crystal-clear lakes. You’ll be immersed in a landscape shaped by fire and water—cycling quiet backroads that wind past shimmering lakes, cascading waterfalls, and dense temperate rainforests. Each day brings a new perspective, whether it’s the rolling hills around Lago Ranco, the steaming thermal waters of Puyehue, or the iconic cone of Volcán Osorno towering above Lago Llanquihue. Between rides, you’ll enjoy accommodations that balance comfort and character. Think spa hotels tucked in private reserves, cozy lakeside lodges, and refined resorts where a post-ride soak in mineral-rich hot springs or a glass of Chilean wine feels especially well-earned. Meals celebrate the flavors of southern Chile—freshly caught fish, locally grown produce, and in the German-influenced towns, a taste of European tradition woven into Patagonian hospitality.
This is more than just a cycling trip; it’s a journey through culture and history as well. You’ll visit charming towns where Mapuche traditions and immigrant heritage meet, stroll vibrant markets in Puerto Varas, and stand in awe at natural wonders like the Saltos del Petrohué waterfalls. Whether you’re powering up a lakeside climb, drifting along with birdsong in the forest, or raising a glass at our farewell dinner overlooking the water, this adventure is designed to leave you with a deep connection to Patagonia’s beauty and spirit.
Day One – Arrival in Osorno – Transfer to tour start
Test ride: 5-15 km / 3 – 9.5 mi
Meals Included: Welcome dinner at the hotel
Welcome to Northern Patagonia! Upon arrival at Osorno’s airport, our team will be there to greet you and escort you via private transfer to our base for the next two nights: the exquisite Futangue Hotel & Spa, tucked into the verdant Andean foothills just outside the town of Lago Ranco. After check-in, take some time to relax, unpack, and enjoy the peace and quiet of this remote mountain retreat. Later in the afternoon, we’ll meet as a group for a bike fitting and safety briefing to get you dialed in and ready for the days ahead. If you’d like to take your bike for a spin, we’ll have a short test route mapped out and ready to access via Ride with GPS. As evening settles over the valley, we’ll gather for a welcome drink and orientation session, where we’ll preview the highlights of the week ahead and answer any questions. Then we’ll enjoy our first dinner together at the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, where local ingredients and refined Patagonian cuisine set the tone for the week.
Day Two – Cycling the Lago Ranco Loop – Ride, Relax, and Recharge
Full ride: 92.5 km / 57.5 mi
Short ride: 49 km / 30.5 mi (until lunch)
Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner
After a restful night at the Futangue Hotel & Spa, we’ll begin the day with a short shuttle to the starting point of our loop ride around the stunning Lago Ranco. This route offers a mix of rolling hills, serene lakeside stretches, and panoramic vistas of the surrounding Andes. As we pedal through quaint villages and lush landscapes, you’ll experience the natural beauty that defines this region.
Cradled in the heart of Chile‘s Los Ríos Region, Lago Ranco is one of Patagonia’s most serene and unspoiled treasures. This glacial lake — the third largest in Chile — is surrounded by rolling green hills, dense Valdivian rainforest, and distant snow-capped peaks. The area is dotted with peaceful rural communities where Mapuche heritage and traditional agriculture still shape the rhythm of life.
The circular route around the lake offers a cinematic blend of natural beauty: shimmering waters that shift in color with the weather, small wooden chapels tucked into roadside hillsides, grazing cattle, and forests alive with birdsong. On a clear day, riders are treated to views of the Caracol Hill and even the iconic silhouette of Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano in the distance. It’s a region that invites you to slow down, take in the scenery, and feel the deep tranquility that characterizes this corner of northern Patagonia.
Day Three – From Lago Ranco to Puyehue – A Journey Through Volcanic Landscapes
Full ride: 83 km / 51.5 mi
Short ride: 55 km / 31 mi
Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic lunch en route, Dinner
Today’s adventure begins with a brief shuttle ride to our starting point. From there, we’ll embark on a scenic cycling route that meanders through verdant forests and alongside the shimmering waters of Lago Puyehue. As we pedal, the majestic Puyehue Volcano looms in the distance, its snow-capped peak a constant companion.
Midway through our journey, we’ll pause for a delightful picnic lunch, set in a picturesque spot that showcases the region’s natural beauty. You have the option to cycle the extended route all the way to the Hotel Termas Puyehue Wellness & Spa Resort bordering Lake Puyehue in the final kms. Alternatively, if you prefer a more relaxed afternoon, there will be an option to transfer from Entre Lagos and to get straight to exploring the grounds or facilities of the Puyehue.
Upon arrival, take time to unwind and perhaps indulge in the hotel’s renowned thermal spa and pools. In the evening, we’ll gather for a pre-dinner briefing and share a toast to the day’s experiences. Dinner will be served at the hotel’s exquisite restaurant, offering a taste of local culinary delights.
Nestled within Puyehue National Park, the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex is a testament to the dynamic geological forces that shape this region. The complex comprises several volcanic structures, including the prominent Puyehue stratovolcano and the Cordón Caulle fissure vents.
On June 4, 2011, after weeks of seismic rumblings, the Cordón Caulle fissure erupted violently in what became one of Chile’s most significant volcanic events of the 21st century. The eruption spewed columns of ash more than 14 kilometers (over 45,000 feet) into the sky, sending ash clouds drifting eastward across the Andes into Argentina, darkening skies and blanketing entire towns.
The picturesque Argentine cities of San Carlos de Bariloche and Villa La Angostura, popular ski and holiday destinations, were among the hardest hit. Ashfall accumulated in meters, damaging buildings and forcing airports to close for weeks. Tourism was brought to a halt at the height of the season, and both towns endured months of clean-up and recovery efforts. Roads were impassable and residents adapted to daily life in a gray, lunar-like landscape.
Though the eruption lasted nearly a year—officially ending in April 2012—the resilience of the local communities and the regenerative power of nature have since restored the region. Today, the ash-fed soil nourishes new growth, and both the Chilean and Argentine sides of the Andes bear subtle traces of the event, adding depth to the awe-inspiring scenery visitors enjoy.
Day Four – Thermal Serenity and Lakeside Pedaling
Full ride: 58 km / 36 mi
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
After yesterday’s long ride, we ease into the day with a leisurely morning at the Hotel Termas Puyehue Wellness & Spa Resort. This historic retreat, nestled within the lush expanse of Puyehue National Park, has been a sanctuary for wellness seekers since the 1940s. Its naturally heated thermal pools, fed by mineral-rich volcanic waters, offer a rejuvenating experience amidst serene forested surroundings.
We’ll gather for lunch at the hotel, savoring local flavors before embarking on a “digestive shuttle” to Entre Lagos, our ride’s starting point. From there, we cycle southward, tracing the contours of Lago Llanquihue. This route offers a tapestry of scenic vistas: verdant pastures, quaint hamlets, and, weather permitting, the majestic Osorno Volcano gracing the horizon with its snow-capped peak. Dominating the skyline, Osorno Volcano rises to 2,652 meters, its near-perfect conical shape often likened to Japan’s Mount Fuji. The ride culminates in the lakeside village of Cascadas, where our accommodation, Hotel Lodge Las Cascadas, awaits. Perched on the lake’s edge, the lodge offers cozy comfort and panoramic views.
In the late afternoon, consider a short walk to the nearby Cascada—the waterfall that lends the town its name. This gentle hike rewards with the soothing sounds and sights of cascading waters amidst lush greenery. As evening descends, we’ll meet for a briefing and share a hearty dinner at the lodge. Tinaja* a word you will soon remember; outdoor hot tub culture in southern Chile, there will be a chance for a dip after dinner.
Day Five – Waterfalls, Volcanoes, and Lakeside Charm
Full ride: 42 km / 26 mi
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch
After a hearty breakfast at Hotel Lodge Las Cascadas, we embark on a captivating ride that takes us through the heart of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile‘s oldest national park. As we pedal along well-maintained paths, the landscape unfolds with lush temperate rainforests, crystal-clear rivers, and, weather permitting, panoramic views of the majestic Osorno, Calbuco, and Puntiagudo volcanoes.
Our first stop is the Saltos del Petrohué, a series of stunning turquoise waterfalls cascading over volcanic rocks. The vibrant color of the water is due to the minerals it carries from the glaciers of the Andes Mountains. The falls are surrounded by verdant woodland, offering dramatic views of the peak of the Osorno volcano. Continuing our journey, we arrive in the quaint village of Ensenada for a well-deserved lunch. Post-lunch, we ascend the slopes of Volcán Osorno ( don’t worry 😉 we ascend with a shuttle). The experience atop the volcano is weather-dependent; on clear days, the summit offers breathtaking vistas and opportunities for exploration. However, if conditions are overcast or windy, we may opt for a brief visit to appreciate the unique environment before descending.
In the afternoon, you have two options:
Day Six – Lakeside Pedal & German Heritage
Full ride: 55 km / 34 mi
Short ride: 30 km / 18.5 mi
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast at Hotel Cumbres, we embark on a scenic shuttle to Puerto Octay, a charming town nestled along the shores of Lake Llanquihue. From here, we’ll begin our final ride, tracing the lake’s edge through picturesque landscapes. The route offers panoramic views of the lake, the Osorno Volcano, and the surrounding countryside.
Upon reaching Frutillar, we’ll visit the Museo Colonial Alemán, a captivating destination that invites visitors to explore the rich history of German settlers in the region. The museum is a recreation of a typical German estancia of the time, featuring five buildings that reflect the common use of wood shingle walls. Inside, you’ll find original 19th-century objects and tools, providing a glimpse into the lives of the early German immigrants to Chile.
The Northern European influences stand in stark contrast to other parts of Chile, where more traditional Spanish, indigenous, and mestizo cultures dominate. As a result, the Lake District is unique in its European-flavored architecture, cuisine, and traditions, which have had a lasting impact on local Chilean culture. The legacy of these European settlers can be felt in everything from the region’s food, with its emphasis on hearty, meat-based dishes, to its charming villages, which often feature Swiss-style chalets and German beer gardens.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant offering German-influenced cuisine, reflecting the area’s blended culture and heritage. Afterward, you have two options:
Tonight, we have a special farewell dinner planned at a surprise location!
Day Seven – Farewell from Puerto Varas
Meals Included: Breakfast
After a final breakfast overlooking Lake Llanquihue and (hopefully) a last clear view of Volcán Osorno, we’ll begin saying our goodbyes. Depending on your flight time or onward travel plans, we’ll arrange shuttles to the Puerto Montt Airport (PMC) or assist you with connections to your next destination.
If you have a little extra time before departure, we encourage a relaxed stroll along the Puerto Varas waterfront promenade, or perhaps a quick visit to one of the town’s artisan markets or cafés — the town’s blend of German architecture, Chilean lake culture, and vibrant energy makes it a lovely place to linger.
