9 day tour
Portugal's Blue Coast
Rota di Vicentina Adventure
Our Rota di Vicentina bike tour explores the beautiful and rugged Atlantic west coast of Portugal, cycling through white washed villages and cork forests along the way. This classic tour has you coasting along quiet back roads from Lisbon to Lagos and the brilliant beaches of the Algarve.
You'll experience a memorable montage on this seaside bike tour of Portugal: magnificent coastal seascapes, pastoral farmlands, working windmills, tiny fishing villages and historical monuments such as Henry the Navigator's Navigational School perched on a wild headland over the blue waters of the Algarve.
It's a wonderful trip with a warm & sunny holiday feel. It's not flat but more of a gently rolling landscape and the accumulated elevation gain for the whole trip is minimal.

Portugal’s Rota di Vicentina Adventure Itinerary
Day One — Vila Nova de Azeitão/Sesimbra
AM transfer from Lisbon to the historic village of Azeitão -famous for its lovely, centuries-old, wine estates and, of course, their wines - especially the delicious moscatel dessert wine. We will have the opportunity to visit one of the finest and oldest wine estates in the country and after our wine sampling, we visit a small tile factory where they still hand-make the azulejos (tiles) for which Portugal is famous. Most of the tiles, made in this incredibly labor-intensive manner, are copies of old tiles. After lunch, we head to our hotel in the picturesque fishing town of Sesimbra stopping at the 13thC Moorish Castle with a spectacular view.
Day Two — Sesimbra to Setúbal (32km / 20miles)
We'll head southeast towards the expansive seaport of Setúbal, known for its breathtaking scenery. This short yet hilly ride will take us through the Serra da Arrábida, tracing the dramatic coastline. This natural park is a botanical treasure trove, home to unique Mediterranean flora, making it a paradise for botany enthusiasts. By lunchtime, we'll arrive in Setúbal, offering a plethora of dining options.
Day Three — Setúbal to Santiago do Cacém (64km/ 40 miles)
You will embark on a ferry ride across the Sado River's estuary and continue your journey southward along the Troia Peninsula. This expansive region is a designated natural park, serving as a wetland habitat for numerous protected bird species, including the commonly seen storks and, on occasion, the more elusive flamingos.
Day Four — Santiago do Cacém to Vila Nova do Milfontes (40km/39miles)
After exploring the Roman ruins of Miróbriga, your journey will lead you in the direction of Porto Covo and further south, where it will culminate with a visit to the tranquil Praia da Ilha. Porto Covo serves as an ideal lunch stop, particularly considering the limited dining options between this point and Vila Nova de Milfontes. At Praia da Ilha, you'll encounter the remnants of a 16th-century fort, strategically erected to safeguard the coastline from marauding Algerian pirates. Just offshore, you'll find the exquisitely picturesque Ilha do Pessegueiro, which, despite its somewhat perplexing name, lacks any trees but features several Roman ruins and the remains of yet another fort.
Day Five — Vila Nova do Milfontes Fisherman’s Trail Walk (10km/ 6miles)
On our second day in Milfontes, don't miss the opportunity to explore one of the most picturesque stretches of the Fisherman's Trail (Rota Vicentina). This hiking trail follows the coastline all the way to the Algarve, and offers breathtaking views of the shore. Although the hike is quite straightforward, do be prepared for sandy terrain – at times, it may feel like you're walking along a sandy beach. The coastal vistas make it all worthwhile!
Day Six — V.N. Milfontes to Alejezur (72km/ 45miles)
Back on your bikes, your journey takes you southward along peaceful, lightly-traveled back roads that meander through fields adorned with lupine, wheat, and oats. You'll eventually cross the Rio Seixe, marking the boundary between the Alentejo and Algarve provinces. As you continue your ride, you'll start to observe subtle alterations in the landscape. Houses tend to showcase flat roofs, reminiscent of Moorish architecture, and feature distinctive white chimneys with intriguing shapes. The farther south you venture, the more abundant fig, carob, and almond trees will grace your surroundings. Along the way, you'll also come across the fascinating strawberry tree, bearing red fruit used in the creation of an exceptionally potent beverage known as medronho.
Day Seven — Alejezur to Lagos (40km/ 25miles)
As we venture from Aljezur to Lagos, you'll find yourself completely engulfed in the breathtaking countryside. The route unfolds through rolling hills, quaint villages, and vast, verdant vistas that seem to stretch endlessly. This journey seamlessly combines the allure of natural beauty with the authentic charm of Portugal, crafting an unforgettable experience for cyclists in search of adventure and tranquil panoramas.
Day Eight — Lagos - Boat Ride
Today, weather permitting, we will take a boat ride which offers a captivating maritime adventure along the stunning Algarve coast. We will explore the region's dramatic sea caves, secluded grottoes, and iconic rock formations while basking in the region's abundant natural beauty. The excursion provides an opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear waters, and enjoy the serenity of the sea.
Day Nine — Farewell
We'll provide a single morning shuttle to the Faro Airport. If you find yourself with some extra time to spare, Lagos is the perfect destination for a few days of well-deserved rest and relaxation on your own.
