Biking Nova Scotia
Our Southshore Coastal Adventure

A 6-day bike tour along Nova Scotia's Atlantic Coast
2010 Season

Lighthouse Route

Our bike tour of the Lighthouse Route is wonderful and popular. The Lighthouse Route hugs Nova Scotia's South Shore from Halifax to the charming area of White Point. Many quaint fishing villages adorn the coast and, amusingly, their colorful fishing boats will recall their brightly painted old homes. This route passes through the beautiful, historic towns of Mahone Bay, Chester, Lunenburg, & Liverpool, and your senses might need reminding that it really is the 21st century. More than twenty lighthouses line this route, including Peggy's Cove - third on the list of Canada's most popular tourist destinations.

Artists and nature lovers have been visiting these shores for years. As you cycle along the coast you will be accompanied by blue herons standing motionless in the shallows, seals bobbing up and down wondering who the curious visitors are, and whales frolicking just off shore. For a closer look jump into one of our ocean-kayaks. You will wonder who is watching whom.

The South Shore of Nova Scotia also abounds with secluded beaches. Whenever the opportunity allows us, we will take the time to explore the beaches for any treasures that might have washed up on shore. At the end of each day we will relax in spectacular country inns known for their charm and hospitality while we reminisce over the day’s activities. (Visit the NS Lighthouse Preservation Society to learn more about our 150 lighthouses).

Day one ( 7 km; 1 mile equals 1.6km):
There is a group pick-up at the Halifax airport around 3 p.m., or if you arrive earlier we’ll pick you up at your hotel in Halifax around 4 p.m. We drive by private van to a local inn near Hubbards and get settled in. You will be introduced to your bicycles and shown a scenic 7 kilometer loop of the area. Riding this loop will help you get aquainted with the bikes and prepare you for the week ahead. We are set to explore the quiet roads of the South Shore of Nova Scotia and experience first hand why they call Nova Scotia and its’ beaches “the Canadian Caribbean”. With endless photo opportunities and excellent cycling, it is hard to believe that today is just the beginning of your adventure. Tonight we'll stay at either The Surfside Inn or the The Hubbards Cove Inn.

Day two: (57 km)
After an early walk on Queensland Beach, we will set off on a wonderful ride around the Aspotogan Peninsula. This quiet route will take us through quaint fishing villages and secluded beaches. After a wonderful homemade seaside picnic we will continue around the peninsula to Chester, a delightful village where we will be staying for the evening. Tonight we'll stay at the The Mecklenburgh Inn.

Day three: (54-70 km)
We leave this quaint area and get off the beaten path by cycling the quiet country roads through Indian Point and Mahone Bay. Today our destination is Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we will hang our helmets for the next two evenings. First settled in 1753, the town has many historic buildings and homes. Tonight and tomorrow we'll stay at either The Bluenose Lodge or The Mariner King.

Day four: (Kayaking, with cycling options)
We will shuttle you back to Mahone Bay for a morning of sea kayaking. Even the novice kayaker will enjoy the beauty of the coastline and numerous islands as enjoyed from the water. This day will leave you plenty of time afterwards to explore Lunenburg, a rare and beautiful town that time has seemingly forgotten.

Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered the best surviving example of a British colonial settlement in North America. Established in 1753, it has retained its original layout and overall appearance, based on a rectangular grid pattern drawn up in the old country. There will also be time to cycle to Blue Rocks, a village adjacent to Lunenburg, and a lovely seafaring town in its own right.

Day five: (50-100 km).
Today we pair up with our bicycles once again as we make our way to White Point—our final destination. We will take a scenic ride on one of the last existing cable ferries to Lahave and stop at the Lahave Bakery for an incredible lunch. After lunch, we continue on to Crescent Beach, Mill Village, and Liverpool before settling in to our lodge for the night. Time permitting, we will stroll the beach or have a quick dip before dinner, and tonight we stay at either Quarterdeck Beachside Villas or White Point Beach Resort.

Day six: (35 km, plus hike)
St. Catherine’s Beach awaits us after a pleasant morning pedal. A pretty hike will take us to one of the Eastern Seaboard’s most beautiful beaches. With any luck, we won’t be alone. This is also the home of the endangered piping plover, as well as grey seals. Weather permitting, we will picnic on the beach and head back to the van for our shuttle back to Halifax.
