Bike Tour of the Canadian Rockies

A 6-day biking tour-de-force
2010 Season

Rocky Mountains

Biking the Canadian Rockies: In a word, the Canadian Rockies are stunning, and this adventure tour is destined to become one of our most popular destinations. We're already certain that you will love this Pedal and Sea Adventure.

How could you not? The soaring Canadian Rockies are magical, with snow-capped mountains rising over valleys carved by ice and history, and blessed by dramatic roads lined by tall pines, where elk and mountain goats frolic like rambunctious children. It feels so real and elementary, so wild and primeval. As we cycle from Jasper to Banff, a steady cadence will take you past dominant glaciers, and mountain lakes so stunningly beautiful that your breath will catch in your throat.

Every dip and rise in the road will bring a gasp of delight and — of course! — we'll be staying at Alberta's best destinations, dining like royalty, and drinking world-class wines from the nearby Okanagan Valley. The pristine mountain air makes everything better, so please join us for our featured departure in the Canadian Rockies.

Biking the Canadian Rockies, Day one: (10 km; 1.6 km equals 1 mile)
A 10 am pick up will have you in our van and quickly outbound from Calgary in what can only be described as a spectacular transfer to Jasper, Alberta. After settling in, we’ll fit your bicycles and for those interested, go on a short ride around the area to help get your legs ready for the days ahead. We’ll arrive at our inn early afternoon and have ample opportunity to settle in before our welcoming dinner. Lodging: Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge or Tekarra Lodge, Jasper.

Day two: (63 km)
With Mt. Edith Cavell as a back drop we depart Jasper, taking the less traveled road south toward Athabasca Falls. After a brief visit to the falls and a hearty lunch, we'll join the Icefields Parkway en route to a cozy, delightful resort nestled in the inspiring Catacomb Mountains. Dinner will be wonderful, and we'll take a short walk to Sunwapta Falls afterwards as we unwind for restful night. Lodging: Sunwapta Falls Resort.

Day three: (49 km)
Eat well at breakfast, so you'll have plenty of energy to enjoy a full day! We’ll head south on the Icefields Parkway for a relatively short biking day as we have a wee climb to Sunwapta Pass, then onto Columbia Icefield, one of North America's best places. Keep a steady eye peeled for mountain goats and bighorn sheep — not to mention bears and elk —that frolic near this beautiful natural corridor that meanders alongside the Sunwapta River. After lunch, you can relax on your own, or venture up to the Athabasca Glacier — in a specially designed vehicle — to get a first hand look as to how the glacier was formed. Lodging: The Icefield Chalet.

Day four: (91 km)
Our longest ride of the week starts with an incredible downhill into the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The route today is comprised of rolling hills — which often boast a tailwind — before we start our climb to the highest point on the Parkway, Bow Summit (2067 metres, 6,780 feet). You won't want to miss our short side trip to see Peyto Lake. After a sweet descent, we'll make our way toward Bow Lake and our historic lodge for the evening. Those with energy to spare will want to join us for a hike to Bow Falls III (101 m). Lodging: Num-Ti-Jah Lodge.

Day five: (42-67 km)
Today is simply a great day. We’re back on our bikes for a short ride to Lake Louise, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After that you'll face a bevy of choices. You can ride to Moraine Lake with views of the ten glaciated Wenkchemna Peaks (25km return); enjoy an incredible hike to the famous Lake Agnes Tea Room (3 hours); spend half the day rafting on the Kicking Horse River (not included), or take a few hours to explore from the comfort of your charming inn. Lodging: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise or Deer Lodge.

Day six: (60 km)
We’ll make an early start today en route to Banff via the Bow Valley Parkway, lined with statuesque pines. Wildlife is abundant, and you shouldn't be surprised to see bear, bighorn sheep and elk — and we shouldn't need to tell you to keep a respectful distance. You'll find too many scenic vistas along our route to mention them all, although we particularly like Castle Mountain and the turquoise Bow River. We'll be stopping at Johnston Canyon for lunch — and a short hike into the Lower Falls. We will finish our day’s ride in the charming — and world famous — town of Banff, where we'll load your trusty steeds in the van. The choice is yours then — we can drop you off at the train or bus station, or deliver you to the hotel of your choice, or you can return with us to the oil-town excitement of Calgary.

We're confident that after you experience the awe and heart-stopping beauty of our Bike Tour of the Canadian Rockies, we'll see you again. So we'll just say so long... until we meet again to share the adventures of the open road.
